The Red Carpet Festival announces a lineup of thought-provoking, emotionally-compelling, and entertaining films from across the Bay Area focusing on the field of youth serives and youth work. These films highlight stories of inclusion, police brutatlity, arts education, sustainable gardening, and diversity from youth and the professionals who work with them. They shine a light on youth voice and celebrate the collective accomplishments of the youth services field.

This year, the collapse of the economy had a significant impact on the social safety net from both the private and public sector. Programs and organizations are fighting to keep their doors open and make the case for why they should exist. The Red Carpet Festival is proud to offer a response to this current situation by giving a vehicle for organizations including YouthCares Intergenerational, CommunityWorks, TILT, Youth Movement Records, Eastbay Pictures International, Richmond District Neighborhood Center, Peer Resources, and Andre Herman Photography to feature the importance of their work.

Films screened are:

  • "Smile for No Reason" - YouthCares Intergenerational
  • "Garrett: The Bondage of Bandages" - Andre Herman Photography
  • "Project WHAT! We're Here And Talking: 2.4 million of us" - CommunityWorks
  • "Town Situation: Knowing your rights about police brutality" - TILT
  • "Never Will Be Forgotten" - Youth Movement Records
  • "Joy Moore: an Edible City Story" - Eastbay Pictures International
  • "13th RDASC Spring Arts Showcase" - Richmond District Neighborhood Center
  • "Don't Hate Appreciate" - Peer Resources

The Red Carpet Festival is also launching a grassroots documentary about the youth services workforce. Community documentarians from across the nation will gather at event and interview guests to collect engaging and moving stories about the importance of youth services and an educated and trained workforce. These stories will be used to create PSAs, educational videos, and ultimately a feature-length film about the youth services sector and its workforce.

The Red Carpet Festival will take place on June 11th, 2009, from 7pm to 10pm at Historic Sweet's Ballroom (1933 Broadway) in downtown Oakland, CA. Price for admission is a suggested donation of $7.

Two awards will be given that evening. One will be awarded by The Journey Navigators, guest judges from Indiana, in the amount of $500. The second will be an audience award. Half of all proceeds raised will go the audience award winner.
